The twelfth inaugural lecture series of Osun state university was on Wednesday, 7th August 2019 delivered by Professor Janet Olubukola Olaitan, a professor of environmental microbiology and public health at the Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola auditorium on the main campus of the university in Osogbo. The lecture which was the 12th in the series of the University’s Inaugural was titled: “MICROBES: “THE INVISIBLE BUT MIGHTY”. The auditorium was filled to capacity by academia, senior government officials, professionals associations, Royal fathers, media and eminent personalities and they were all entertained at the end of the lecture.

In attendance at the inaugural lecture were the Deputy Governor, Mr. Benedict Gboyega Alabi; the Akire of Ikire Land, HRH. Oba Olatunde Falabi among other chiefs and academia.

The lecture presented that microbial life is amazingly diverse and their existence is intertwined in our lives. Microorganisms exist in many environments and there is a link between exposures to infectious microorganisms in the environment and human health. She further advises that it is left to us to decide our relationship with these invisible microbes by taking into consideration our environments and health status.

Professor Janet Olubukola Olaitan is the first female deputy vice-chancellor (Administration & Development) of Osun State University, Osogbo. She is a member of some learned and professional associations including Nigerian Association of Microbiology (NSM), American Association of Microbiology (ASM), Society for Applied Microbiology (SFAM, UK) American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) International Union of Microbiological societies as well as West African Research and Innovation Management Association.
