I welcome you warmly, to the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, one of the core Departments at the Faculty of Agricultural Production and Management of College of Agriculture of Osun State University, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.
No doubt, agricultural extension experts are change agents and change they say, is the only permanent thing in life. And so, I implore you all to keep evolving to radiate desirable change(s) always as your best is surely yet to come. However, please endeavour to have positive disposition about life, at all times.
Location:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, a product of the bifurcation of the defunct Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, is housed by the College of Agriculture, Ejigbo Campus of Osun State University. The ancient town of Ejigbo, Osun State shares border with Oyo State. The people of Ejigbo having an elite king are quite accommodating and receptive and so the indigenes pose little or no threat to the peaceful and fruitful stay of our students on and off campus, all through and even beyond the length of their study time.
Academic Programmes:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development offers academic programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our undergraduate programme leads to the award of Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) Degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development while we run postgraduate degree programmes at the following levels:
- Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development;
- Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development;
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development.

To be a reference point in the provision of all-inclusive world class teaching and learning experiences to spawn undergraduate and postgraduate products with unequalled global competitive advantages, across board.
Mission of the Department:
To be exemplary in the uptake of global technological and professional innovations in pursuance of top-notch resourceful training in agricultural extension and all-round advisory services towards achieving the substantiable development goals.
Philosophy of the Department:
The Philosophy of the Department is to produce thoroughly bred, skilful and self-reliant graduate and postgraduate change agents who are highly relevant to nation building particularly in the agricultural development sphere at the national and international levels. The Department is also committed to the achievement of the two foremost sustainable development goals of No poverty and Zero Hunger, hence we are engaged in quality agricultural extension and advisory outreach services targeted towards boosting the productive capabilities of local farmers across the three agricultural zones in Osun State and beyond. We are equally open to public private collaborations geared towards improving the livelihoods of resource-poor farm families within and outside Osun State, our primary environment.
Physical Facilities and Development:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development can boast of the following functional physical facilities:
- a standard well-equipped and decent Departmental office
- a communication studio for agricultural journalism and;
- a well- stocked home economics laboratory
In the near future and in preparation towards having a full-fledged proposed Department of Livelihood and Consumer Sciences as an offshoot of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, we are working towards having other complementary home science facilities including:
- a caregiver centre (creche) for minding toddler children of staff and/or some married students on campus
- a recreation centre for indoor games like Ludo game, Ayo Olopon, Scrabble, Monopoly etc.
- Apparel laboratory for sewing and other relayed practical works, among other facilities
Research Activities
Members of academic staff in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development are constantly engaged in impactful basic and applied research across different aspects of agricultural production with the ultimate aim of improving the living standards of the farming folks.
