Introduction to Haematology & Blood Transfusion
Welcome to the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This department is dedicated mainly to the training of medical students and allied health sciences students, including Medical Laboratory Science.
Haematological diseases are common in our environment-including Sickle Cell diseases (HbSS, HbSC), Acute and Chronic leukamias, and Lymphomas. Consequently, it is an implicit component of pathology within the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences that every medical student must be conversant with.
The medical students are significantly involved in our outreach and research programmes, fostering a hands-on approach to clinical excellence.
Our Mission
To disseminate current up-to-date knowledge and practices in Haematology and Blood Transfusion to students through comprehensive lectures and practical sessions.

Academic Schedule
Currently training three classes of medical students: 400L(A), 400L(B), and 400L(C).

Physical Development
The department is strategically based within the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, housing the offices of the HOD and lecturers.
Laboratory Complex: Scientists are situated in the medical laboratory complex adjacent to the haematology lab for student demonstrations.
Empowerment Service Projects
Blood Transfusion Drives
Organizing yearly blood drives to mark World Blood Donation Day. We focus on increasing awareness and safe donation practices within the community.
Public Health Awareness
Disseminating vital info on Sickle Cell disease and HIV/AIDS. Outreaches and media (Radio) engagements are conducted annually on World AIDS Day (Dec 1st).
Research Collaboration
Active medical research published in reputable journals, collaborating with sister institutions including the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital.
