Current/Recent Research
My research interest involves the investigation of pharmacological potentials of selected medicinal plants in the mitigation of neurological syndromes (N.S) in cerebral malaria (CM) via the use of experimental CM model. The germane factor determining plant of choice is the literature ascertained pharmacological activities – including but not limited to: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, anticonvulsant and other activity that might be involved in CM mitigation such as nitric oxide and cytokines-inducing pharmacological properties. For my Master’s degree, I investigated the pharmacological potentials of graded doses of the essential oils of Curcuma aeruginosa and in combination with quinine (standard) in the progression of CM. This was monitored via selected screening panel which include – parasitemia assessment, survival rate, SHIRPA functional behavioural assessment and histology of the brain tissue. This research work has been published in Phytomedicine plus, Elsevier. I am extending the concluding part of my M.Sc. research for my PhD. I shall be incorporating computational biology, network pharmacology, and bio-assaying of drug agent and implicated cytokines/ chemokines in brain and blood of CM induced mice. This is in the view to determine phytochemical component(s) in the oil that could serve as drug-lead in the management of N.S of CM.
