The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Bashiru Okesina, has re-echoed the commitment of the institution to academic excellence, leading to the production of globally competitive graduates. Professor Okesina made this commitment while declaring open the fifth UNIOSUN InterCollegiate Debate and Essay Competition held on Thursday, 9 May, 2013, at the Main Auditorium of the University, Osogbo.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Provost of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Professor Alagbe Wasiu Gbolagade, commended the Committee in charge of the debate for organising a very transparent and well-packaged programme.
He promised to sustain the programme. In order to add value to it, Okesina advised the organisers to seek sponsors for the programme.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the 5th InterCollegiate Debate and Essay Competition, Professor Temi Ologunorisa, said the competition was organised to broaden the knowledge of students. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the support the Committee had received.
Participants from the College of Law went away with major prizes as Alimi Safia and Oni Emmanuel respectively came first and second in the Essay competition while Alabi Abisola from the College of Education came third. Also in the Debate competition, the College of Law came first with 62 points, followed by the College of Humanities and Culture with 59 points and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology came third with 49 points.
First place winners for Essay and Debate events went home with a mini laptop each; second place winners received N30,000 worth of books and third place winners received N20,000 worth of books.
