The Philosophy for Educational Technology

The philosophy of the B.Ed. Educational Technology is centered on the promotion of the study of Educational Technology and its cognate subjects as academic disciplines in an effort to satisfy the dire need for qualified teachers for the effective implementation of the National Policy on Education at the post-primary school level.

Objectives

The objectives of the Educational Technology programme at the University level are to produce highly qualified Teachers knowledgeable in both the processes of Educational Technology and capable of inculcating these in the students. Students should have the following competencies:

  1. Ability to demonstrate competence in instructional design, educational software development and multimedia authoring.
  2. Ability to select and integrate distance learning resources

iii. Ability to develop, select and integrate teaching and learning resources in the classroom.

  1. Skills in research abilities in different areas of instructional and learning technologies.
  2. Ability to conduct research related to optimal efficiency and effectiveness of instructional and learning technologies.
  3. Ability to provide a variety of community services through seminars, symposia, workshops

Introduction

 The Department of Educational Technology took off as a programme in the Department of Science, Technology and Mathematics Education in the College of Education of Osun State University after resource verification, during 2020/2021 Academic Session. The programme started as a four-year Degree programme with options in Seven (7) teaching subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, Economics, English, and Political Science.

For admission into any of the first degree programmes of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
  2. Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level, must have at least five (5) O/L credits, two of which must be at Advanced Level or approved equivalents.                         

Candidate seeking admission to read B.Ed. degree in Educational Management must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects: English Language and Mathematics to form the core subjects, with credit in three other relevant arts; social science or sciences subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

B. Ed. Educational Management

The Philosophy for Educational Management

The Philosophy of B. Ed. Degree in Educational Management (EDM) is the acquisition of appropriate managerial skills, abilities and competences such that the prospective educational manager would better understand human behaviour and interrelationships; predict them and be in a vantage position to manage both the human behaviour and the interrelationships.

 

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are, among others, to:

  1. produce graduates that are competent as both teachers and managers of educational organizations;
  2. enhance the productivity and relevance of education to the society through professional management of the sector;
  3. lead the spirit of enquiry, creativity and entrepreneurship of teaching through leadership by example;
  4. enlist motivation into all personnel of the different segments of the Education sector.
  5. be in a better position to lead others in the education sector and outside it.

The Department of Educational Management took off as a programme in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education, after resource verification, during 2015/2016 Academic Session and now a department of its own. The programme started as a four-year Degree programme. The Department operate academic curricula that are tailored along the stipulations contained in the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.  

Presently, the Department runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

  • Undergraduate degree: B.Ed. (Educational Management)
  • Postgraduate degrees M.Ed. and Ph.D. degree in Educational Management

For admission into the first degree programme in Business Education a candidate must have the SSCE or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects not more than two sittings; English Language and Mathematics to form the core subjects with credit in any of these subjects. Bookkeeping/Financial Accounting, Commerce, Marketing, Economics, Salesmanship, Stenography, Office Practice and Geography. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the (UTME). Four (4) academic years for UTME entry candidates

B.Sc. Ed. Business Education candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level Business Education programme must have Advance level passes in at least two (2) social science subjects; Economics, Business Studies and Accounting in addition to credit level passes in five (5) of the subjects listed above at the SSCE or its equivalents. Candidates with NCE/Diploma and approved equivalents in relation to Business Education with at least a lower credit may be considered for Direct Entry into the programme provided the candidate also possesses the UTME requirement. Three (3) academic years for direct candidates depending on student’s entry qualification

 B. Sc. (Ed) Business Education

B. Sc. (Ed) Degree Business Education programme is to provide individuals with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to be self-reliant and economically self-sufficient for gainful employment, meaningful living, and to contribute to the development of the society. The programme is designed in consonance with the needs of the business community to ensure that education and training offered are consistent with the competencies for the present and emerging job requirements and opportunities.

Objectives

  1. It provides opportunities for practical job preparation or vocational studies in order to make students render effective and efficient services in office, distributive and service occupations.
  2. It prepares students, based on interest and aptitudes needed to enter into a business occupation, advance and profit in it.
  • It provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of business and economic system of the nation so as to enable them to participate actively as producers and consumers of goods and services
  1. It develops in students the basic awareness of the contribution which business and office employee makes to the Nations’ economy.

The programme started as a four-year Degree programme with four students. B.Sc. (Ed) Degree Business Education is a specialized profession designed to provide students with knowledge, skills and competence leading to employability and advancement in office occupations, pedagogical skills in teaching business subjects at different levels of educational system as well as self-employment or being an employer of labour. As an aspect of Vocational Education and Training, Business Education is designed to fill the gap between knowledge and practice by exposing students to General Education as well as specialized areas in Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Office Management.

The Philosophy for Economics Education

The B. Sc. (Ed) Economics Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education Economics in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of Economics in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the programme are to:

  • Identify models that identify the essence of a problem, analyse and reason both deductively and inductively;
  • Provide training in the principles of economics and their application appropriate to the type of degree concerned-single, joint and combine studies;
  • Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts;
  • Provide a firm foundation of knowledge in a range of settings

 B. A. (Ed) English

The Philosophy for English Education

The B. A. (Ed) English Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education English in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of English in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.

Objectives

The objectives of this programme are to:

  1. inculcate the basic skills in the study of oral and written language and literature;
  2. acquaint students with the basic structures of English Language sentences, clause and phase;
  • inculcate proficiency in the use of English Language for communicative purposes;
  1. expose students to basic genres of literature within and outside Nigeria (i.e. Prose, Poetry and Drama).
  2. prepare students for the teaching of language and Literature in Nigerian school system.

Political Science Education

The B. Sc. (Ed) Political Science Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education Political Science in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of Political Science in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.

Objectives

The main objectives of a degree in Education Political Science are to:

  • provide training in the principles of Political Science and their application to the classroom practice;
  • stimulate the student intellectually through the programme in such a way that they appreciate social problems;
  • provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge;
  • develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts;
  • develop in students such skills and competencies that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial.
