In a significant boost to Osun State University’s growing international profile, Professor Olukoya Ogen, a renowned historian and Director of the Office of Research and Innovation Management (ORIM), has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (RHS), United Kingdom, becoming the second Nigerian and African scholar to receive the prestigious honour.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ademola Adesoji, on Monday, July 21. According to the statement, Professor Ogen’s election to the Fellowship was based on his pioneering methodology and innovative contributions to historical scholarship.

In a formal letter signed by Professor Lucy Noakes, President of the RHS and the Rab Butler Professor of Modern History at the University of Essex, the Society praised Professor Ogen for his “innovative methodology and original contributions to historical research.

With this honour, Professor Ogen joins a distinguished cohort of 78 newly elected Fellows drawn from ten countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Established in 1868 and based at University College London, the Royal Historical Society is the United Kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious body dedicated to the promotion of historical scholarship. The Society regularly elects University-based scholars as well as independent researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the field, both within and outside academic institutions.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the achievement as a major milestone for both Professor Ogen and the University.

This international honour reflects Professor Ogen’s enduring excellence in historical scholarship and reinforces UNIOSUN’s reputation as a globally engaged institution of academic distinction,” the Vice-Chancellor said. “We are proud of his accomplishments and the global visibility they bring to our University.

In addition to this latest recognition, Professor Ogen is also a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Academy of Letters, cementing his stature as a leading figure in the humanities.

His election into the Royal Historical Society affirms not only his personal academic standing but also underscores Osun State University’s commitment to advancing high-impact research and promoting international collaborations.

The University congratulates Professor Ogen and the Department of History and International Studies on this landmark achievement and looks forward to even greater academic milestones.
