Biosketch:
Professor Olu Israel OYEWOLE is a Professor of Biochemistry with specialization in Molecular Toxicology. He holds Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. His research focus is in the area of molecular toxicology, phytomedicine and drug development and he has authored well over sixty (60) research articles in reputable national and international journals in this field. He has designed and supervised more than 160 undergraduate research projects and 23 postgraduate theses.
He has made substantial contributions in investigating the potency of indigenous medicinal plants in the prevention and management of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hepatorenal damage using animal models.
He has explored the antioxidative and free radical scavenging properties and possible pharmacological mechanisms of nutraceuticals and functional foods with the aim of providing affordable and non-toxic approach to management of different ailments. This contribution is important in the design and development of new less toxic drugs from natural origin which can be used in combating free radical mediated diseases.
He has also researched on the pharmacological and toxicology effects of many drugs and their possible antidotes which have provided useful information for drug designers, clinicians and drug users. Valuable contributions have been made to the food industries and for consumers through his works on toxicology of food additives and spices. In addition, his investigation into finding suitable antidotes for toxicity of herbicides and pesticides has added new knowledge in the field of environmental toxicology.
His research findings have provided knowledge for the design and development of new drugs from natural origin with little or no toxic effect which can be used in combating free radical-mediated diseases. He has researched extensively to finding suitable antidotes to counter the toxic effects of herbicides, pesticides, food additives and spices which has added new knowledge in the field of environmental and food toxicology.
He is a recipient of the Meritorious Award as a Distinguished Professor of Eminence with Global Recognition in the field of Biotechnology†an award by Recent Advanced in Biotechnology (RAIB). He also won the Outstanding Lecturer of the year 2020, an award of recognition by the Southwest Nigeria Excellence Education Awards.
Professor Oyewole has presented papers in many local and international conferences, workshops and seminars. He belongs to many professional Associations including Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB), West African Society of Toxicology (WASOT), Society of Toxicology (USA), Society of Basic and Clinical Toxicology, Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology (NISEB) and Nigerian Institute of Biomedical Engineering (NIBE).
